Montessori Microschool Company wins Design Challenge from The Mind Trust
A school model led solely by classroom teachers that operates in one-room storefronts has been awarded a $250,000 grant to put down roots in Indianapolis. Wildflower Schools, which includes 14 Montessori microschools in three states and Puerto Rico, was selected as the second winner of the Charter School Design Challenge, which seeks to bring innovative charter school models to the city.

Buffalo Students Learn Yoga to Deal with Trauma
Students as young as five at Bennet Park Montessori School on Buffalo's East Side are learning yoga. “These are lifelong tools that they can use the rest of their life,” said Krista Palgutt with the Montessori Community Association. The yoga class is run by Yogis in Service and the school's parent group. The idea is students can use the methods taught in yoga to deal with stress or trauma.

Could the Montessori Method Help People with Dementia?
In 2011, adopting the Montessori method enabled one facility in Australia to eliminate the use of antipsychotic drugs, previously used by 75% of residents, and to reduce the use of sedatives from 67% of residents to just 2%. In 2006, a report prepared for the District of Columbia Office on Aging found people with dementia responded better to Montessori-based activities, with increased levels of engagement and ability to handle difficult tasks, than to non-Montessori-based activities.

Dear Ask a Montessorian, what would you do with a sixth grader that is “too cool” to follow classroom procedures, use materials appropriately, respect her classmates and teacher, and generally doesn’t seem to care that her bad behavior, like throwing food at peers at lunch? She is the class president as well. Her behavior is rubbing off on the younger students.

Albany Montessori Students Raise Money for Puerto Rico
The event at Albany's Montessori Magnet School was appropriately “Jamming the Lights Back On for Puerto Rico" and featured a local Latin band and a Zumba lesson. Hurricane Maria, a category four storm, devastated Puerto Rico in September, 2017. More than 40,000 people remain without power. Potable water and food are still scarce in certain sections of the Caribbean island. The Montessori Magnet School community raised more than $800 in cash and supplies during the event.
